Publication Date: September 4, 2007
My rating: ★★★
My mom LOVES John Grisham. Like, really loves him. My dad can never surprise her with a new book out by him because she already knows about it and most likely went out and bought the book on release day. I could say I’m somewhat like that with Nicholas Sparks and Emily Giffin, but not quite.
Anyway, I borrowed this book from my mom hoping to enjoy John Grisham as much as she does. I’ve read a couple other books by him in the past and I’ll be honest I was a little so-so with those ones. Unfortunately I feel that same way with this book. To be fair, I never expected I would fall in love with a story about football. I live in the Midwest where football is pretty popular, but it’s just not my favorite game to watch. I love football season with the weather, tailgating, etc. And the atmosphere of college football games is definitely something to experience. But a story about a football team in Italy? Really didn’t do much for me.

Of course the writing is good, it is John Grisham after all. I feel like as the reader we get to know the main character, Rick, pretty well. However I didn’t find myself interested in any (literally ANY) of the other characters we were introduced to. Most of them didn’t seem to have strong enough personalities for me as the reader to connect to. This could also be my lack of interest in the subject of the book, so take my opinion on this with a grain of salt.
This book wasn’t bad by any means, just not my kind of story. I don’t mind a sports book here and there, but maybe I’ll stick to sports movies for a while.
